Kaduna (WorldStage Newsonline)-- There was pandemonium on Sunday at the Ungwan Yelwa in Chikun Local Governmnent Area of Kaduna State following a gun battle between police and an unidentified gun men who were taken to be members of the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram.
One of the four-man gang was gunned down by the Police while three others are now at large. They were said to have escaped with deadly weapons.
The police command in the state has meanwhile beefed up surveillance in the area and beyond. There are unusual stop and search by the Police in the affected area and within the metropolis.
The Kaduna State Commissioner of police, Mohammed Abubakar said the fleeing suspects were not the dreaded sect but men of the underworld. “They are not Boko Haram, we will address the press later,” he said.
But before then, residents of the area had mobilized themselves from nearby Churches and homes chanting “Book Haram” during the shoot out between the police and the four-man gang.
An eye witness said on hearing of the shoot –out people in large number surged out to confront the suspects, believing they were members of the violent Islamic sect.
He said: “The crowd started shouting, “Boko Haram o!, Boko Haram o!!, Boko Haram o!!!, make una come o!!!
“About four people were inside a tinted Peugeot 206, they put on masks, they earlier beat Police check point at Barnawa junction, but Police later pursued them.
“As the Police blocked the suspects’ vehicles, one of them shot a gun into the air, probably to scare the Police, but the Police opened fire on the driver and killed him.”
