The Lagos State government has advocated the use of (LPG) cooking gas as an alternative to kerosene, fire wood, and saw dust.
The Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Engineer Taofiq Tijani who stated this today at a road show organized by the Ministry in collaboration with the Lagos State Chamber of Commerce and Industry lauded the merits of LPG as fuel of choice for cooking in Lagos State.
The Commissioner restated Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola’s determination to make life easier for Lagosians which informed the introduction of gas cylinders in different affordable sizes with easier payment options.
He noted that kerosene was not only expensive and out of the financial reach of the masses but scarce and not environmentally friendly, noting that the introduction of the LPG (cooking gas) makes cooking cheaper.
Tijani noted that LPG was available in abundance in the country, declaring that in neighboring countries like Ghana everybody including road side food sellers and caterers had embraced LPG as a means of cooking.
The Commissioner warned that cooking with fire wood could be hazardous to the individual and harmful to the environment.
Earlier, the Chairman Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Prince Bambo Ademiluyi who also doubled as the coordinator of the event alleged that firewood use depleted the ozone layer and the environment.
He said that Gas cylinders has been made available in 3kg, 5kg, 6kg and 12.5kg sizes and are available for outright purchase at the event or refilling in all the 20 Local Government and 57 LCDAs in Lagos State.
Ademiluyi advised those who could not afford the 12.5kg to buy any of the other smaller sizes and pay instalmentally at their convenience. He added that for as less as One Hundred Naira one could refill your gas cylinder at any of the local government or local government development areas.
According to Ademiluyi, there is collaboration with community development councils in each neighborhood and forms are already available for interested persons who wanted to purchase the gas cylinders and pay in instalmental basis or through Micro Finance Banks on hire purchase basis.
The Chairman Isolo Local Council Development Area, Honourable Shamsudeen Abiodun Olaleye in his speech, appreciated Mr. Babatunde Fashola; Governor of Lagos State whom he noted always had the interest of Lagosians at heart, admitted that as a local Council Development Government Chairman he had approached the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation on the need for them to reduce the cost price of Kerosene and make it available but it never happened. He therefore appreciated the introduction of different sized gas cylinders into the Lagos Market and the mode of payment options available.
He promised that his Local Council is available for use as depot and purchase point for the LPG and refill point.
Also present at the road show were the Iyaloja of Farounbi Aswani market Mrs. M A Adewunmi and many other market women and men.
Gas companies present at the event were Oando, Strategic Energy, Power Gas, Gas Terminal and many others.
The Chairman Isolo Local Council Development Area and the Iyaloja of Farounbi Aswani market were both presented with gas cylinders and accessories at the event.
