North-East: British Defence to support Nigerian Army in fight against insurgency

WorldStage NewsOnline—- In a bid to ensure effective prosecution of the counter-insurgency war in the North East, the British Defence Council has promised to support the Nigerian Army by providing necessary logistic support.


The United Kingdom Defence Adviser to Nigeria, Mr Paul Warwick, disclosed this when the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing, led a delegation to Army Headquarters on Thursday in Abuja.


Warwick said that the relationship between Nigeria and Britain was special and mutually-beneficial that was built on strong foundation over years.


According to him, the two countries have profound historical links and forged economic ties among other things that have helped achieved socio-cultural growth in diverse aspects of their economies.


“We are here basically to initiate discussions that will assist the Nigerian Army and other security agencies to record grand accomplishment in fighting insurgency, together with other security challenges and crimes.


“We are also here to engage relevant stakeholders in the Nigerian government to fast-track accelerated economic development for the Giant of Africa,” he said.


Responding, Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, commended the British government and its Defence Council for the continuous assistance and intervention.
